In a recent post on the Camcode blog, they posed the question “When it comes to improving warehouse productivity, the most important thing for companies to remember is…” to a variety of warehousing industry insiders, from technology experts to shelving specialists.
It’s a good read and you’ll get way more than 7 tips for improving your warehouse productivity. But if you don’t have time to read the entire post, here are a few highlights:
- Always look at implementing new procedures and new technologies to save both time and effort in daily warehouse operations. It seems like there’s a new solution every day. They may not all be applicable in your warehouse, but keeping tabs on what’s out there pays off when you can put one to work.
- You can’t improve what you don’t measure. You need to know your productivity costs, costs on shipped orders, cost per box, etc.. Then use the data as a baseline for improvements.
- Use the maximum vertical space in your warehouse. You’re always looking for a more place to put inventory – look up, not out.
- Implement custom kitting strategies, like grouping and bagging components that are often used together, to help reduce inventory handling.
- Maintain a lean, just-in-time culture throughout the organization.
- Regularly ask your warehouse employees how they could work better and improve processes. They are experts in what they do and they represent a large, untapped resource in the company. And you will help improve employee morale and engagement at the same time.
- Make sure your top-selling or fastest-moving products are the easiest to get out the door.
Even if you already do all of the things listed above, it never hurts to keep productivity front-of-mind and hopefully these tips inspire a few of your own.
